request an appointmentWhat is breast reduction?
Breast reduction is a type of cosmetic surgery that removes excess glandular tissue, skin, and fat to achieve a breast size that compliments your body’s proportions. In addition, breast reduction can alleviate both physical and social discomfort associated with having overly large breasts.
Who is a good candidate for breast reduction?
Choosing to undergo breast reduction surgery is a personal decision. You might benefit if:
- You think your breasts are too large
- Your breasts prevent you from exercising or other physical activities
- You experience back, neck, or shoulder pain due to your breasts
- Your breasts hang low, causing your skin to stretch
- The skin beneath your breasts is irritated
You might also benefit from breast reduction if your areolas are enlarged due to stretched skin.
What happens at a breast reduction consultation?
During a breast reduction consultation, Dr. Han assesses your physical and mental health and asks about your goals. He then examines your breasts, takes photographs, and conducts detailed measurements, analyzing your breasts’ size, shape, and skin quality.
After gathering the necessary information, Dr. Han walks you through the different types of treatment and explains the possible outcomes. He also makes recommendations for the type of anesthesia from which you’ll most benefit.
What does breast reduction involve?
Dr. Han performs breast reduction on-site in an accredited, office-based surgical suite. First, he administers general anesthesia, putting you to sleep. Once the anesthesia sets in, Dr. Han makes an incision around your areola. He repositions your nipple and reduces, lifts, and shapes the underlying breast tissue.
If your breasts are extremely large or pendulous, Dr. Han might recommend a free nipple graft. During this procedure, he removes your nipple and areola altogether and repositions them.
After removing the excess tissue, skin, and fat, Dr. Han pulls your incisions together, creating a smaller breast. He uses sutures or skin adhesives to close the incisions. Over time, the scars fade away, ensuring your smaller, shapelier breasts look completely natural.
What is recovery like following breast reduction?
Following breast reduction, Dr. Han provides you with a support bra, prescription medication, and a list of recovery instructions. In the days after your procedure, make sure to keep your dressings and bandages clean. In addition, take your medication as prescribed, and attend all follow-up appointments with Dr. Han.
As your body heals, protect the surgical incisions from excessive force, abrasion, or motion. If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or a rapid heartbeat, contact Dr. Han immediately.
