What is breast augmentation?

Breast augmentation is a type of plastic surgery that enhances the size of your breasts. It uses silicone, saline, or gummy implants to make your breasts fuller, rounder, and more shapely. Breast augmentation can also be used in breast reconstruction following a mastectomy or injury.

Who is a good candidate for breast augmentation?

It’s worth considering breast augmentation surgery if:

  • You feel your breasts are too small
  • Weight loss has changed the size or shape of your breasts
  • Your breasts have become smaller or lost their firmness due to childbirth
  • Your breasts are different sizes

You might also benefit from breast augmentation if you feel self-conscious about wearing swimsuits or other form-fitting tops.

What does a breast augmentation consultation involve?

Before recommending breast augmentation, Dr. Han assesses your physical and emotional health and discusses your goals. To get the most out of your appointment, let Dr. Han know about any previous cosmetic surgeries you’ve undergone. In addition, bring a list of all the prescription medications, vitamins, and supplements you regularly take.

Following an in-depth discussion, Dr. Han examines your breasts and photographs them for the medical record. He then develops a custom surgical treatment plan that aligns with your budget and needs.

How is breast augmentation performed?

Dr. Han performs breast augmentation on-site in his accredited surgical suite. Prior to surgery, he administers general anesthesia, causing you to fall asleep. After the anesthesia sets in, Dr. Han makes a small incision in one of three locations –– underneath the breast, around the lower edge of the areola, or within the armpit.

After making the incision, Dr. Han creates a pocket and carefully inserts the implant under your pectoral muscle or behind your breast tissue. The method for positioning the implant depends on your body type, the type of implants, and Dr. Han’s recommendations.

After positioning the implants, Dr. Han closes the incision with sutures and wraps your chest in surgical dressings. Typically, breast augmentation takes between one and two hours.

What is recovery like following breast augmentation?

Following breast augmentation surgery, you’re moved to an observation room for several hours. Once you’re stable enough to discharge, a friend or family member can drive you home.

In the days following your procedure, wear a support bra as recommended. Take your medication as prescribed, and follow Dr. Han’s instructions carefully. Rest and relax for at least 48 hours after your operation. Don’t exercise or participate in other strenuous activities until Dr. Han says it’s okay to do so. Any swelling, soreness, or discomfort should subside within two weeks.
